MASTER PROJECT

Above-ground biomasse in tropical tree plantations
As part of my master's project, I had the chance to visit a very diverse ecosystem, the tropical forest. Until recently, however, a large majority of plantations used non-native fast-growing species such as teck, acacia and eucalyptus. An effort led by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and Yale School of Forestry in Panama, is being evaluating native and non-native tree species for their potential to re-establish tree cover on degraded land. In this study we evaluated by destructive sampling above-ground biomass accumulation and distribution of 16 native and 2 non-native tree species. Although numerous trial plantations have been established, comparative information on the performance of native trees under different regional environments is generally lacking. For this reason, trees were studied in two locations with soil quality and rainfall very distincts (2226 mm rain yr-1 [wet site] and 1107 mm rain yr-1 [dry site]).

Seven of the 18 species accumulated greater total biomass at the humid site than at the dry site over a two year period. Species-specific biomass partitioning among leaves, branches and trunks was observed. However, a wide range of total biomass represent among species (from 1.06 kg for Dipteryx panamensis to 29.84 kg for Acacia mangium) justified the used of an Aitchison log ratio transformation to adjust for size. When biomass partitioning was adjusted for size, a majority of these differences proved to be a result of the ability of the tree to support biomass components rather than the result of differences in the regional environments at the two sites. Furtermore, basal diameter, height and diameter at breast height are robust predictors of biomass for the pooled data from both sites.
